Ramp up Your Recycling
Investigate how you can improve your household recycling and help the planet. It is important to do what we can to reduce landfill waste. The availability of recycling facilities varies depending on where you live. Some people have curbside recycling, while other places require you to take your recyclables to a drop-off recycling center.
Curbside collection materials:
Plastic bottles and containers (certain plastics are not included)
Tin and aluminum cans
Paper, cardboard and paperboard
Glass
Recycling Guidelines:
Clean or rinse recyclables of excessive residue
Don't put everyday “trash” in the bin
Avoid medical waste or personal hygiene items
Contact your local recycling center for more information on what you can and cannot recycle
Don’t nest materials with unlike materials (ie. tin can inside a cereal box)
Local Information:
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy has developed a recycling guide to determine what you can recycle curbside and what you can take to a drop-off center click here.
In Orion Township, GFL provides curbside recycling for all residents. For guidance on what can be recycled click here.
The Independence Township website has information on where you can recycle anything from appliances to tires click here.
Several Oakland County communities are part of NoHaz, a consortium that holds collection events for household hazardous wastes (cleaners, automotive chemicals, electronic waste, etc.). For information and collection dates, click here.
