Poem: The Peace of Wild Things - Wendell Berry

Preservation Site on the Shiawassee River Acquired by NOHLC

The Holly Village Council voted on March 8, 2005 to enter into a partnership with North Oakland Headwaters Land Conservancy in protecting the wetlands associated with the southernmost park in the Village.

WaterWorks Park is the site of historic structures that formerly used the water power from the millpond created by Holly's pioneers.  The Village acquired the site about fifteen years ago, including 5.2 acres of wetlands, and established a passive park. The wet portion is actually the flood plain of the Shiawassee River and contains "braided channels" of the river meandering through dense hummocks of marsh vegetation.

Navigating the wetlands requires a canoe or kayak.  This often flooded area contains valuable wildlife habitat and lovely scenic views. Early returning bird migrants seek out the open water and stake out territory for the year. The area also provides critical flood storage capacity. The Village of Holly is able to avoid flooding by preservation of its wetlands while other areas of Oakland County are under water.

North Oakland Headwaters Land Conservancy is pleased to partner in this preservation opportunity by executing a perpetual conservation easement over this remarkable oasis contained within the Village limits. NOHLC members will steward the property, work to remove invasive loosestrife and promote natural vegetation. The Village of Holly will guard against degradation and offer wildlife viewing opportunities through its parks system.

This easily accessible site, on Broad Street opposite Stiff's Millpond, will continue to offer benefits to the public and a delightful location to view the first returning Sandhill Cranes or the lone hold-out Great Blue Heron who stalks the river banks in search of food. NOHLC commends the vision of the Village of Holly in preserving this special wetland.
