Poem: The Peace of Wild Things - Wendell Berry

Rose Township Preservation Committee

The Rose Preservation Committee is focused on preserving land in Rose Township through the North Oakland Headwaters Land Conservancy.  Our primary objective is to preserve land with high ecological and scenic value along the Shiawassee River and within the Shiawassee Watershed.  The Shiawassee River watershed covers over 90% of Rose Township.  Almost half of the Township lies within the Buckhorn Creek Subbasin.

The Rose Preservation Committee supports the work of other groups with a similar mission, including the Nature Conservancy, the Oakland Land Conservancy, and the Shiawassee River Task Force.  We encourage members to become informed about the ecology of Rose Township through training with NOHLC and by working to designate appropriate roads as a Natural Beauty Roads.

Rattalee Shoreline Preserve

Fifteen acres of land along Rattalee Lake was acquired by a generous, anonymous donation.  The preserved area includes shoreline and lake bottom in the pristine headwaters region. Rose Preservation members are engaged in baseline documentation of the property and removal of a few invasive species and a small amount of trash.  Since the site is inaccessible from roads, visits to the site require prior permission from NOHLC in which a crossing of private property is arranged.

NOHLC is working with homeowners who have wetlands or grasslands and who wish to increase the value of their properties for wildlife and native species. We will refer interested landowners to our Landowner Incentive Program Coordinator for more information on how to make these

improvements to private land.

Meetings

Meetings are held periodically in order to discuss and take action on: designation of high quality properties especially within wildlife and riparian corridors, acquisition of potential properties available for  preservation, stewardship issues related to existing properties, and programs that enhance the quality of life within the township such as those related to water quality and the use of native vegetation.
