Independence Township Preservation CommitteeIndependence Township is the birthplace of the North Oakland Headwaters Land Conservancy. Established in 1972 as the Independence Land Conservancy, (one of the first two in Michigan); the Conservancy changed its name in 1998 to the North Oakland Headwaters Land Conservancy. The Independence Preservation Committee has worked hard over its 30 years to protect and link the remaining high-quality natural areas in Independence Township, sometimes in partnership with the Township and developers. The following NOHLC owned Preserves, totaling over 175 acres, are in Independence Township:
In addition, NOHLC holds Conservation Easements on more than 20 properties, totaling more than 315 acres, in Independence Township. These easements allow the owner full use and privacy while protecting the natural features forever. Together, NOHLC’s easements and preserves comprise almost 500 protected acres in Independence Township. The Committee continues to promote the preservation of natural areas, wildlife, flora and fauna, and water-quality in Independence Township.
